This project, covering the Caminada Headland, was Louisiana’s largest civil engineering initiative at the time. The dunes were built to a height of ±7 feet, with a crest width of 290 feet. CPRA continues to monitor subsidence, plantings, and bird populations. Sand fencing and native vegetation were added.

CAM I placed 3.62 million cubic yards of sand along 5.5 miles of beach, creating 303 acres of dunes and restoring 70.5 acres of near-shore habitat. Final plantings were completed in 2017, costing $70 million, funded by Terrebonne Parish Coastal Impact Assistance Program funds and state surplus funds.

CAM II placed 5.22 million cubic yards of sand along 7 miles of beach, creating 489 acres of dunes and restoring 196.9 acres of habitat. Final plantings were completed in 2017, costing $144 million, funded by NFWF’s Gulf Environmental Benefit Funds.
