Wisner is working with Dr. Eugene Turner of the Lowlander Center to re-establish the coastal wetland hydrology above- and below-ground by degrading spoil banks on the surface and pushing the material into the canals in the Bayou Segnette area. The four former well-heads on Wisner’s property were plugged and abandoned in the 1960’s. This will allow the native vegetation to regrow on the canal banks Over time the canals will fill in, restoring these former wellheads to marsh. It is anticipated that the spoil banks will be 80% revegetated in 1 year and 90% revegetated in 2 years. It will take longer to fill in the canals. The permit expedited has performed his site visit. Backfilling is a cost-effective way to restore marsh lost to canals that were dredged.
